RALPH SHANKS is the author of Indian Baskets of Central California and California Indian Baskets. He is president of the Miwok Archeological Preserve of Marin. He is a research associate in anthropology at the University of California, Davis. He also teaches Native American basketry at the University of California, Davis, and the College of Marin.
