Review of Geology of the Lassen Country
It's been quite a few years since I have visited Lassen Park. When I was a young child visiting for the first time I was filled with awe at the power of nature, the grand volcanic vistas dominating the park. The images in my memory of that first visit to Lassen so many years ago lingers in my mind to this day. That is why I picked up a copy of "Geology of The Lassen Country" just as soon as I became aware that it had been written. The authors deserve a tremendous salute. They are obviously excellent geologists and we readers reap the benefits of over 30 years of mapping and study. Lassen's history is a story of multiple volcanic events. This isn't surprising to anyone familiar with Pacific coast vulcanism and the Cascades. Hopson and Clynne not only make the geochemistry understandable they explain the role of local plate tectonics in the creation of the scenery we love. After reading this book you will understand and appreciate the Lassen area like never before. To my knowledge nobody has put together a better study of the area, and I doubt it will ever be bested. If you want a guide to hikes in the park along with explanations of the scenes this book should be in your daypack.
